Contrast – A selection of images from our #ThursdayTheme

Our #ThursdayTheme last week was ‘Contrast’ photography, which is not only the difference between dark and light but also refers to the contrasts created with colours, tones and textures. You could interpret this anyway you wanted to and we had various representations.

The lovely Michael Carver once again helped us to choose this weeks #FridayFoto and after much deliberation, he chose this amazing shot by Laura Rossi which “really caught his eye”.

Here’s what Michael had to say about Laura’s image:

“All of the photographers on here really put their own stamp on the interpretation of the theme ‘contrast’, some with contrasting colour, some with contrasting light, some with contrasting texture – this one pretty much nails every aspect of contrast I can think of!!

Technically, its fantastic. The sharp butterfly contrasts so well with the out of focus leaves – its really sharp and this isn’t easy when you might only have a couple seconds to get the shot whilst the butterfly rests.

I loved the limited colour palette and those cool tones, the composition is nice too with all of the leaves leading out to the focal point. At first I thought it might have been improved had the bright leaf not been covering part of the butterfly but after looking at it for a while I thing the out of focus part accentuates the in focus parts and it works really well. The butterfly has been framed in front of a darker piece of the background that helps it pop off the page.

All in all, a really cool shot that caught my eye the moment I spotted it when it was posted during the week”.
