Rainy Day Photo Projects: Gearing up for Light Painting

Impact Flex Arm Super Clamp Kit, Tested and Reviewed

I recently put the Impact Flex Arm Super Clamp Kit through my rigorous testing process, which involves using it in a variety of photography situations, coming up with ways to put it to work getting the shots I want, and generally abusing the *bleep* out of it to see how it stands up to wear and tear. While it's not what I think of as the usual gear for nature photographers, I found it useful for a number of my photo pursuits both indoors and out in my backyard photo studio/nature sanctuary.

Cats – A selection of images from our #ThursdayTheme

You guys love your cats! We’ve already seen your dogs so for last week’s #ThursdayTheme we asked to see your stunning cats – thank you to everyone who shared an image with us.

We chose this little beauty to be our #FridayFoto. It was lovingly captured by Jodie Waite.

Here’s what Julie had to say about Jodie’s’s image:

“A cat with such elegance and good looks deserves to be photographed in ways that showcase this. And that’s exactly what Jodie has managed to do.
I love that she is looking off to the side so that we can see that gorgeous long neck and the break in the pattern under her chin.
She has been beautifully lit. I also absolutely love the warm golden tones in this image. Everything in the image marries together beautifully for a rich, regal feel.
It’s a work of art Jodie – thank you so much for sharing it with us!”

Please join us… 😉

8 Easy Steps To Photographing Fireworks

Fireworks may be spectacular to watch, but try to photograph them without the right gear and without the proper techniques, the photographs are anything but dazzling. Photographing fireworks—essentially streaks of light that are moving in the dark—isn’t an easy task, often resulting in blurry shots and inaccurate exposures. So how...

Mirrorless Camera Maniac: Does Form Follow Function?

When it comes to Mirrorless cameras, you’ve got two basic styles to choose from. The traditional SLR-shaped camera with a viewfinder in the center of the body, and the rangefinder style, with the viewfinder mounted at the top left corner of the body. Interestingly, you can’t divide the styles up by brand because most of…

The View Camera Aesthetic in the Digital Realm part 2

(Editor’s note: Steve Inglima continues his thorough explanation of the view camera. The first post in this series introduces the view camera. This installment shows how tilting the lens results in more being in focus than is possible with only a small aperture set on the lens.) The plain truth about focus in a single plane…

The subtle desaturation of the image, along with a shallow depth of field, help bring…

Portrait Tips: Muscle Memory

When you’re making pictures with people, you need to have practiced your camera well enough that you can change the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed (or Exposure Compensation) without taking your eye from the viewfinder. Muscle Memory Go ahead and practice right now. You should be ‘dry firing’ your camera daily. Take it with you…

Freckles – A selection of images from our #ThursdayTheme

We gave you two weeks to hit us with your ‘freckles’ so be warned you are about to see some of the most charming images you will have ever seen!  My daughter has freckles and I always tell her “a face without freckles is like the sky without stars”.

#FridayFoto was almost impossible but we chose this beauty by Victoria West!

Here’s what Julie had to say about Victoria’s’s image:

“What a great close-up portrait of a really beautiful boy.

The lighting you’ve chosen and the amazing black and white conversion you’ve done really enhance the freckles and show them in all their glory. You can tell this image is taken with that purpose.

I love the expression. It’s such a soulful, subtle smile but it goes right up into the eyes which have gorgeous catchlights.

Stunning portrait Victoria – thank you!”
